3 Simple Steps to Downsizing Your Home Without the Stress

Downsizing works best in three phases: divide your tasks, gather your resources, and create a flexible moving timeline, making the process more manageable and stress-free.
Are you thinking about downsizing but not sure where to begin? When you’ve lived in your home for years, the idea of making a move can feel more like a project than a decision. There’s usually a lot to do, and the question becomes: how do you even start?
I recently sat down with Brenda Paradis, a senior real estate specialist, to talk about how we guide sellers through this kind of transition. One thing she emphasized is how helpful it is to meet with an agent early in the process, so you can start building a clear, step-by-step plan and make things more manageable. Here are three ways to do that.
1. Divide the project into different phases. Trying to tackle everything at once can feel like too much, so instead, break it down to smaller tasks, like going through a closet or decluttering a single room, and work your way through. This keeps the task manageable and lets you see progress along the way.
The idea is to pace yourself by focusing on what needs to be done without feeling rushed. Some people may even need six months to a year before they’re ready to sell. That is why having a clear structure for what you need to do over time can make the whole thing feel achievable.

2. Align with the right resources. Downsizing doesn’t mean you have to do it all on your own. Finding the right help is also important to make the process go smoothly. Whether it’s hiring a professional organizer, finding a reliable moving company, or getting assistance with donations and decluttering, having support will reduce the workload and ease the emotional burden.
Sometimes, it’s just about knowing who to call when you hit a roadblock. Aligning with the right resources early on gives you the chance to plan and tackle the tasks that are overwhelming on your own. With the right help, you can stay on track and save time in the long run.
3. Start early to pace yourself based on your plan. When you meet with a real estate professional early in the process, you’re not locked into any deadlines, but you are setting yourself up for success. You’ll have time to create a plan that works for you, adjusting it along the way as things come up.
By starting sooner, you avoid the stress of rushing through things at the last minute. Plus, having more time means you can focus on what matters most to you, like taking care of sentimental items or making sure you’re listing the house at the right time.
Downsizing doesn’t have to be a huge and stressful ordeal. With a well-thought-out plan, the right support, and a little bit of patience, you can make the process much easier.
