The book you must read: COLOR OF LAW (We are giving away 10 Copies!)

We believe that Black History is not to be learned about one month a year, but it’s part of our collective history and the story of the past should be represented by all participants that have experienced the past and live to retell it.  This is intersectionality at the core.  No one narrative is dominant, it’s symbiotic to who we are as a people, Americans and temporary residents on planet earth.  As a real estate team, we read Color of Law by Richard Rothstein.  Our takeaway as real estate professionals and white people is that we felt this was a history that needed to be learned as we had all collectively been on this earth for over a hundred years and we had never learned this history. This didn’t and doesn’t feel right and it has called us to share this book with as many people as possible. It’s that important.

This book gives a broader context on how our communities, subdivision, and neighborhoods were formed, it’s how our roadways have been paved,  watersheds have been damned and the way the swamps have been drained and how the desertification of the land has been perpetuated. It’s how our landfills are positioned and where we dump our chemicals.  Home and housing are the foundation of family and how we show up in the world. And the famous real estate adage simplifies this;  your home value is determined by price, condition and location. When these three things don’t add up, you have a depreciating asset. The lines were drawn by one type of people for the rest of all the people and where you live, determines how your children will live.

We look to the Haudenosaunee philosophy regarding the seventh generation in how we do our business in real estate and at BonaFide Green Goods.  The decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.   We think this is connected to how we develop, how we build, how we zone, code and live in our houses which is why this is also connected to the work we do at BonaFide Green Goods. In order for us to progress as a society that values, people, planet and profit, we have to be honest with ourselves and our pasts.
