How To Help a Loved One With a Big Transition

Three questions we ask when we help a client prepare for their last move.

Are you getting ready to make your last move? Are you trying to help a loved one through a lifestyle transition? If your answer to either of those questions is yes, there are a few things you should know. To help figure this out, I spoke with Brenda Paradis, who is a senior real estate specialist on our team. This is a big issue, but there are three main questions we would ask to help you with this situation: 

1. What’s motivating you to make this transition? In our experience, typical scenarios include retirement, looking to downsize, families outgrowing their homes, and wanting to move closer to family.

2. What is your timeframe? Moving is never easy, so you want to start the process early to minimize any stress. Being proactive will help you in the long run. 

3. Who are the key decision-makers involved? If it’s just you and your spouse, the situation won’t be very complicated. However, if you’re trying to help your parents transition to an assisted living facility, for example, that will be more complicated because there are more people involved. Also, who is in your circle of trusted advisers? Do you have a senior real estate specialist who is going to help you with the planning? Do you have a trusted CPA, estate planning attorney, or financial advisor? Those are all critical components of your plan.
