Find the Perfect Home for Your Situation
Great information and tips for those looking to rightsize or downsize.
I recently spoke with Brenda Paradis, an experienced Realtor and nurse, about rightsizing and downsizing. She has a breadth of knowledge about helping people make their last moves in life.
Rightsizing is about finding the right housing solution, depending on the life stage that you're in. In many cases, making a lifestyle transition occurs when we're slowing down in life or our priorities are shifting in a different direction. You might consider moving to a single-level home without stairs or a home that offers an accessory dwelling unit to accommodate a multi-generational living situation or help senior family members make the transition to assisted living. If you're contemplating a rightsizing move, we should have a conversation at least six months before you list the home.
“Don’t underestimate the physical and emotional toll that downsizing can take on you.”
On the other hand, downsizing is the process of reducing your household inventory in preparation for the transition to a smaller home or a different lifestyle situation. To prepare for downsizing, you need to allow sufficient time and start early. Downsizing can take at least two to three months. Start that process before the home is listed.
You also need to set up a schedule for your downsizing process so you can hit your goals on time. You may need to allocate more time to a certain area of your home. There are different strategies that one can follow, and we’re happy to help you with that.
